Maverix Broadband delivers fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) using a fiber optic modem (also known as an ONT) to provide a direct, high-speed internet connection. However, depending on your service location, a wireless router may be required if you need Wi-Fi coverage throughout your home. If a separate router is necessary, you can either bring your own compatible device or ask our technical support team for guidance on wireless router selection.
Technical Requirements
Minimum Requirements
If you plan to use your own router with Maverix Broadband, it must meet these minimum technical specifications:
Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or newer
WAN and Ethernet ports for wired connectivity
Recommended Specifications for Best Performance
To maximize your experience, especially for customers using 2 Gbps or faster speeds, we recommend the following:
Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) or newer for improved performance and security
Mesh system for homes over 1,500 sq. ft. or multiple floors
2.5G or faster Ethernet WAN port for higher-speed connections
2.5G or faster LAN ports (if using wired connections)
Do You Need to Provide Your Own Router?
In some areas, Maverix provides an all-in-one fiber modem/router, while in others, a separate router is required to enable Wi-Fi. You may need to provide your own router if:
Your location requires a standalone Wi-Fi router to connect wirelessly
Your router does not meet Maverix’s technical compatibility standards
You live in an apartment or rental unit where networking equipment is managed by the property owner
Why a Router is Necessary
Maverix provides a fiber optic modem (ONT) that delivers ultra-fast internet to your home. However, an ONT alone does not broadcast a Wi-Fi signal—a separate router is needed to connect your devices wirelessly.
A Wi-Fi router:
Enables wireless access for smartphones, laptops, gaming consoles, and smart home devices
Acts as a security layer, keeping your home network protected from external threats
Allows you to customize network settings for parental controls, guest Wi-Fi, and more
Mesh Wi-Fi: The Best Solution for Larger Homes
For homes over 1,500 sq. ft., multi-story buildings, or spaces with thick walls, a traditional single router may not be enough to provide full Wi-Fi coverage. That’s where mesh Wi-Fi comes in.
What is Mesh Wi-Fi?
Instead of relying on a single router that weakens over distance, a mesh system uses multiple devices (nodes) placed throughout your home to create one unified network. These nodes communicate with each other and automatically direct your devices to the strongest signal, ensuring seamless Wi-Fi in every room.
How Mesh Wi-Fi Works
A mesh system consists of:
Main Router – Connects to the fiber modem (ONT) and serves as the central hub.
Satellite Nodes – Additional units placed around the home to extend coverage and eliminate dead zones.
Unified Network – Unlike traditional Wi-Fi extenders, which create separate networks, mesh Wi-Fi keeps a single network name (SSID), so devices automatically connect to the best signal as you move around.
Why Choose Mesh Wi-Fi?
Whole-Home Coverage – Eliminates dead zones in large homes, basements, or garages.
Stronger, Faster Wi-Fi – Maintains speed across multiple devices without slowdowns.
Seamless Roaming – No need to switch between networks—your device stays connected.
Expandable & Future-Proof – Easily add more nodes to improve coverage if needed.
Wi-Fi 6: The New Standard in Wireless Technology
Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) is the latest standard, designed for faster speeds, reduced congestion, and better security.
To fully benefit from Maverix Fiber’s high-speed network, we recommend using a Wi-Fi 6 router. Keep in mind:
Both your router and connected devices must support Wi-Fi 6 to see the full benefits.
Wi-Fi 6 is hardware-dependent—it cannot be added through a software update.
Upgrading to Wi-Fi 6 ensures faster performance, reduced interference, and better protection against cyber threats.
Choosing a Compatible Router
Maverix supports customers who bring their own routers to reduce e-waste and provide flexibility. Our fiber modems (ONTs) use standard Ethernet, ensuring broad compatibility.
However, not all routers are compatible. Check the following before using your own equipment:
✅ Compatible:
2.5G+ WAN and Ethernet ports
❌ Not Compatible:
DSL routers (labeled DSL, with a smaller port size)
If you're unsure whether your router is compatible, contact our support team for help.
Support for Third-Party Routers
Maverix will do our best to assist customers who bring their own routers, but please note:
Our team can provide basic setup guidance, but cannot directly configure third-party routers.
For advanced settings and troubleshooting, you may need to contact your router manufacturer.
