What is a Public Static IP and how do I add one to my Services?

Updated today

A public static IP address can improve the reliability and functionality of your internet connection, especially if you need to host servers, access devices remotely, or solve NAT issues for gaming. This article explains what a public static IP is, how it works, and how to request one from Maverix.

What Is a Public Static IP?

A public static IP is an IP address that:

  • Never changes (unlike dynamic IPs which can change periodically).

  • Is routable on the internet — meaning it can be directly reached from outside your local network.

This makes it ideal for:

  • Hosting websites, VPNs, or game servers.

  • Remote access to devices like security cameras or NAS drives.

  • Configuring custom network rules and services.

  • Reducing complications with online gaming NAT types.

Understanding NAT and NAT Types

Most modern internet connections use something called NAT (Network Address Translation). NAT allows many users to share a single public IP address, which helps reduce global IP address usage—especially important since IPv4 addresses have been exhausted worldwide.

However, NAT comes with trade-offs:

Common NAT Types in Gaming or Services:

  • Open NAT – Best connectivity. Few or no restrictions.

  • Moderate NAT – Some limitations on who you can connect with.

  • Strict NAT – Most limited. May prevent connecting with others.

  • Double NAT – Happens when two layers of NAT exist (e.g., your router and your ISP). Can cause major issues with services and games.

How a Public Static IP Helps

A public static IP, in combination with port forwarding, can eliminate most NAT issues:

  • You get a direct, routable address on the internet.

  • You can set specific port forwarding rules on your router to allow outside connections into your network.

  • This avoids "Double NAT" problems and can often change your NAT type from "Strict" to "Open."

✅ This is especially beneficial for gamers, remote workers, server hosts, or users of P2P and real-time applications like VoIP or video conferencing.

Why Don’t All Users Get Public IPs?

Due to the worldwide exhaustion of IPv4 addresses, most internet carriers (including mobile and broadband providers) must use NAT to conserve IPs. It's no longer feasible to assign every customer a unique public IP by default.

That’s why Maverix offers public static IPs as an add-on, for customers who need this level of access and consistency.
